Three things to know before you buy an inverse ETF

Some products can lose money even when your call is correct. This is one of them.

One: inverse is also a daily objective

An inverse ETF tracks the opposite of the index's daily move. Index down 1%, fund up about 1%. So far, intuitive.

Hold it beyond a day and the daily reset takes over. Period returns drift from "up by however much the index fell" — and if the index falls in a choppy way, the inverse rises less than you expected.

At 2x inverse the drift is far larger, visible within days.

Two: markets have tilted upward over time

Equity indices have trended up over long horizons. An inverse position leans against that, which means time works against it.

Losses are not unlimited — you cannot lose more than you put in. But the longer you hold through a rising market, the harder recovery gets.

It pairs especially badly with holding on because "it has to fall eventually".

Three: hedging requires sizing

Many buy inverse to protect existing holdings. Skip the sizing and you have not hedged, you have added a second directional bet.

Work from the amount you want covered and the fund's multiple: offsetting ten million won with a 2x inverse takes roughly five million. Your holdings will not track the index exactly, so the offset is never clean.

Hedging also costs. If the market rises, the hedge loses. Treating it as an insurance premium is the honest framing.

So when is it the right tool?

For a specific decline you expect over days or weeks, and for stepping around a dated risk such as an earnings release or a policy decision.

Not for long holds, not for averaging down, not for waiting to be proven right. Time is the adversary here.

Deciding your exit before you enter is the minimum safeguard.
