Why thematic ETFs always arrive late — the structural bias in launch timing

A thematic ETF gets listed because demand exists. And that demand usually shows up after the theme has already run.

Sectors and themes are different products

A sector is a classification. It sorts listed companies into fixed buckets — energy, financials, health care — and those buckets exist regardless of what is fashionable. A company's business decides its sector.

A theme is a story. Groupings like 'battery', 'obesity drugs' or 'AI infrastructure' are not pre-existing buckets; someone selected the constituents to fit a narrative people care about right now.

That makes the holdings heavily dependent on the issuer's interpretation. Two funds carrying the same theme name overlapping by less than half their holdings is not unusual.

Listings follow the fashion

Launching a new ETF means building an index, clearing review, and preparing distribution. From concept to listing takes months.

An issuer commits to that cost once interest in the theme is already visible. Money does not flow into a topic nobody has heard of, so commercially this is the rational call.

The result is that launches cluster after the story has spread. The theme becomes easiest to buy exactly when it is hottest — a bias produced by the structure, not by any single issuer behaving badly.

The backtest was built before the launch

Marketing material for a new listing shows several years of index performance. That is not a live track record; it is the rules as finalised today, applied backwards to historical data.

The rules were written with knowledge of the past. If you design selection criteria while already knowing which names ran hardest, good historical numbers are close to inevitable.

Once real money is running, trading costs, liquidity limits and rebalancing slippage arrive. That is why post-launch results so often fall short of the backtest.

If you want one anyway

Read the holdings. The name is marketing; the constituents and their weights are the actual product. Large caps with little obvious connection to the theme frequently sit near the top.

Check top-holding concentration. Themed baskets often have few eligible listed companies, so ten names can exceed half the portfolio. It looks diversified and behaves like a bet on a handful of stocks.

Look at the expense ratio and assets. Thematic funds usually cost more than broad index funds, and when attention fades, shrinking assets make them candidates for closure.

Finally, size the position while acknowledging you are arriving after a run. Structurally, a thematic fund belongs on the side of a portfolio, not at its core.
