When to place an ETF order — spreads and market makers
The minute you press buy affects your return — most of all in thinly traded funds.
The spread is a cost
There is always a gap between the best bid and the best offer. Crossing it is what makes a trade happen, so you start every position slightly behind.
In heavily traded funds that gap is tiny. In thin ones it is conspicuous.
The expense ratio is charged once a year; the spread is charged on every trade. Trade often and it matters more than the fee.
What market makers do
ETFs have designated liquidity providers who post continuous bids and offers, keeping the fund tradeable and its price near asset value.
Their obligations run for defined hours, and those hours exclude a window right after the open and before the close.
Quotes thin out in exactly those windows, spreads widen, and fills get worse.
Timing and order type
Avoid the first and last minutes; the calmer middle of the session is generally better.
Market orders are convenient and risky — placed into a thin book, they can fill far from where you expected. A limit order caps that.
For a locally listed fund on a foreign index, pricing is tightest while that market is open and the underlying is actually moving.
In short
Choosing a fund with real turnover is the first defence: a tight spread makes timing matter less.
For a large order, work it in pieces — pushing it all through at once moves the price against you.
And if you are buying small amounts regularly for years, none of this matters much. It matters in proportion to how often you trade.
