Why one KOSPI 200 ETF gets all the volume — the liquidity moat

Same index, near-identical performance — and a hundredfold gap in turnover. Where does that come from, and what should you actually look at?

Same performance, lopsided trading

Six managers list what is essentially the same KOSPI 200 leveraged product. The index is identical, so daily returns differ only in the decimals.

Turnover is not remotely even. One product handles well over a trillion won in a session while the rest sit in the single-digit billions — a gap past a hundredfold that has held for years.

When performance matches and only the trading differs, that difference becomes a property of the product.

Whoever got there first keeps winning

Heavily traded tickers carry tighter spreads. Tighter spreads lower the cost of trading, and lower costs pull in more trading. Once ahead, a fund tends to stay ahead.

Institutions feel this most. If you have to move a large block, whether it fills cleanly matters far more than a few basis points of fee — and their flow widens the gap again.

That is why a later entrant cutting fees rarely flips the market. Not because the product is worse, but because it arrived later.

So should you avoid the smaller ones?

For small, regular purchases held long term, it hardly matters. At a few hundred thousand won a go, what leaks through the spread is negligible, and a lower fee may well win.

Trade often or in size and it flips. Every round trip pays the spread again, which overtakes a fee difference quickly.

For leveraged and inverse products, built for short holds by design, the liquid one is almost always the right pick — frequent trading is the whole premise.

The two numbers to check

Start with turnover in currency, not share count: a low-priced fund shows a big share count for the same money, which makes volume misleading.

Then net assets. A fund that stays too small can be delisted or merged. That is not a loss in itself, but it forces you to unwind on someone else's schedule.

Once both look adequate, compare fees. Do it in the other order and you can save a few basis points while losing more in execution.
